An 8-Seat Dedicated Cinema Room with Sony 4K Laser, Artcoustic 7.2.2 and Crestron Control
This dedicated home cinema room in Surrey occupies a purpose-built space measuring 6m wide by 5.5m deep — large enough to accommodate a genuinely theatrical experience, and designed from first principles to make the most of every square metre. A 3.8m acoustically transparent projector screen, a Sony VPL-VW760ES 4K laser projector, a full Artcoustic 7.2.2 speaker system and Crestron lighting and control combine in a room that has been acoustically modelled, fabric-wrapped and tuned to perform as well as it looks.
The Projection System
The Sony VPL-VW760ES is one of Sony’s finest residential laser projectors — producing a native 4K image with 2,000 lumens of brightness and the exceptional black levels and colour accuracy that laser illumination delivers. It sits at the rear of the room, projecting onto a 3.8m (150″) Screen Excellence acoustically transparent screen that spans the full width of the front wall. The acoustically transparent screen is fundamental to the design: it allows the three Artcoustic front-stage speakers and two subwoofers to sit directly behind it, maintaining perfect spatial alignment between image and sound. Sources include Sky Q, Apple TV 4K and a Kaleidescape movie server.
Artcoustic 7.2.2 Surround Sound
The speaker package is a full Artcoustic 7.2.2 immersive audio configuration — seven main channels, two subwoofers and two height channels. The front stage comprises three Artcoustic Spitfire 24-12 speakers and two Control 3 subwoofers, all positioned behind the acoustically transparent screen. Four Artcoustic Spitfire 8-4 speakers concealed within the acoustic fabric walls handle the rear and surround channels, and two Architect SL4-2 speakers in the ceiling provide the height channels for Dolby Atmos content. The entire system is driven by an Anthem MRX-720 AVR, with Anthem’s ARC room correction software performing full acoustic calibration after installation — ensuring the system performs at its best within the specific acoustic environment of this room.
Seating and Lighting
Eight seats are arranged across two rows — individual recliners on the front row and two-seat sofas on the elevated rear row. Tables between each seat provide space for drinks and accommodate individual reading lights, adding a considered touch of comfort for long viewing sessions. A full Crestron lighting control system manages every light in the room across multiple scenes — bright for entry and exit, dim amber during viewing, fully off for the most immersive experience. The entire audio-visual system is controlled from an iPad running a bespoke Crestron interface: one button press starts the projector, selects the source and sets the lighting to the correct scene.
Acoustic Treatment
The acoustic performance of this room was not left to chance. A full acoustic model was built during the design phase, identifying the positions and types of treatment needed to control standing waves and early reflections. The walls and ceiling are finished in an acoustic fabric system applied over a fleece wrap, which absorbs and diffuses sound at the room boundaries without the visible acoustic panels that would compromise the room’s aesthetic. The result is an acoustic environment that is exceptionally neutral — free of the bass build-up and frequency colouration that affect untreated rooms — allowing the Artcoustic system to perform at its full capability.
The Result
A room designed and built to perform: from the screen and projector selection to the acoustic modelling, the speaker positioning, the fabric finish and the Crestron control interface. Every decision was made in service of the experience — and the experience of watching a film in this room reflects that. It is the kind of cinema that, once built, is used daily rather than saved for special occasions.
