Custom Controls are a luxury smart home installer and home cinema company. We design, install and support bespoke Crestron and Lutron systems for exceptional residential properties — from London townhouses and Cheshire estates to alpine chalets and Dubai villas. We have been doing this since 1998, and it is all we do.

Our History

Custom Controls was founded in 1998 — the year Lutron Homeworks first became available in the UK and the period when Crestron was establishing itself as the dominant residential automation platform in the country. We have been at the centre of the UK’s luxury smart home industry for the entirety of its development as a mature market. In 25 years we have installed hundreds of systems — from single-room cinema installations to whole-estate automation projects spanning multiple buildings. We have worked through every generation of Crestron and Lutron hardware, migrated clients through multiple platform changes, and been involved in projects that were, at the time they were completed, among the most technically ambitious residential installations in the world.

We have not diversified into commercial installation, systems integration or IT services. Smart home and home cinema for luxury residential clients is what we do, and we have spent 25 years perfecting our art.

London – Tel: 020 3012 0321. Our London office covers the capital, Home Counties and South East. We are minutes from the Lutron Experience Centre on Finsbury Pavement, which we visit regularly with clients.

Cheshire – Tel: 0161 663 0456. Our Cheshire office covers the North West — Alderley Edge, Wilmslow, Prestbury, Knutsford, Hale, Bowdon and the wider region.

Alps – Based in the Haute-Savoie our Alps office covers the Portes du Soleil region directly and works with local partners across the French and Swiss Alps — Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel, Megève, Méribel, Courchevel, Verbier, Zermatt.

Dubai and International – Dubai is our most established international market. We have been active in the UAE since the early 2000s and typically run two to three Dubai projects simultaneously. We also work in Morocco, France, Spain, West Africa and across the wider Middle East. All international projects are pre-built and pre-programmed at our UK workshop before shipping.

Our Approach

Pre-build methodology – Every Custom Controls system is fully assembled, programmed and tested at our workshop before it arrives on site. Equipment racks are wired, labelled and configured. Software is written, debugged and tested. What arrives on site is a finished system, not a collection of components. This is the single most important reason our installations consistently finish on time and to specification — and it is an approach that requires the infrastructure and experience to execute reliably.

Bespoke programming – We do not use template programmes. Every Crestron system is programmed from scratch to reflect the specific layout of the property, the specific preferences of the client and the full roster of third-party systems that need to be integrated. The programme for a six-bedroom London townhouse is different from the programme for a Cheshire estate — not just in the number of zones but in the logic, the scenes, the automations and the interface.

Long-term support – We are still maintaining systems we installed in the late 1990s. Every system we install is configured for remote monitoring from our UK operations. We are notified of faults automatically and resolve the majority remotely before the client is aware of them. We offer annual maintenance contracts for all platforms and provide software updates, reprogramming and hardware upgrades throughout the system’s life.

Manufacturer independence – We are not owned by, financially dependent on, or commercially incentivised by any manufacturer or distributor. Our recommendations are based entirely on what is right for each project. We install Crestron and Lutron because they are the best platforms for the work we do — not because of margin incentives. If a project is better served by a different platform, we say so.
