Smart Home Aftercare and Maintenance

Monitored, Maintained and Supported Since 1998

A smart home is not finished on the day it is handed over. Control processors, lighting systems, networks, streaming services and cinema equipment all receive software updates, devices are added and replaced, and the way a household uses its home changes over the years. Without proper aftercare, even the best installation slowly drifts away from the system that was commissioned. Our aftercare and maintenance service exists to stop that happening — keeping every system performing the way it did on the day it was handed over, and better where technology allows.

We support every system we install, and we take over systems installed by other companies where the original installer has closed, moved on or no longer meets the standard the owner expects. We have been doing this since 1998, and we are still maintaining systems we installed in the late 1990s. Annual maintenance contracts are available for all the platforms we work with — Crestron, Lutron, home cinema, multi-room audio and video, networks and security — and we provide software updates, reprogramming and hardware upgrades throughout a system’s life.

The same engineers who design and commission our systems are the people who look after them afterwards. That continuity is the point of the service: nobody has to rediscover how a property was put together, because the team supporting it built it, documented it and has watched it run every day since.

Remote Monitoring From the Day of Handover

Every smart home we install is enrolled in our remote monitoring service from the day it is handed over. The system reports its own health to our UK operations: processors, network devices, third-party equipment and integrations are logged continuously, and we receive an automatic alert when anything degrades. A heating zone that drops below its set point, a network device that goes offline or an unexpected entry event is flagged to us rather than discovered by the owner.

In practice, the majority of issues are resolved remotely before the client is aware of them. A projector light source approaching the end of its life is identified and replaced before it fails mid-film. A satellite receiver that has stopped responding is rebooted remotely and its integration checked. The household simply carries on using the house, and in most cases no call is ever made.

Remote access also means that programming changes, software updates, new scenes, keypad remapping and fault diagnosis can be carried out from our UK operations without a site visit in the majority of cases. An engineer attends when the work genuinely needs someone on site — not as the default response to every request.

Annual Maintenance Contracts

Our annual maintenance contracts combine remote monitoring with scheduled preventative maintenance visits, software and firmware updates, programming refinements, system health checks and priority response. They are available for every platform we support, so a single contract can cover the control system, lighting, cinema, audio and video, network and security of a property rather than leaving each one to a different supplier.

Contracts are built around the property rather than a standard template. A family home with a dedicated cinema needs different attention from a second home that sits empty for months, or a chalet that is let to guests between the owners’ own visits. We agree the scope with each client — which systems are covered, how often we visit and when — so that the contract reflects how the house is actually used.

For Lutron lighting, a contract typically includes scheduled programming reviews and software updates alongside priority response; for home cinemas it adds the calibration and projector checks described below. Where a property only needs occasional help — a scene reprogrammed, a new zone added or a keypad remapped — we also provide one-off programming and service visits without a contract.

What a Maintenance Visit Covers

Maintenance visits are timed around the life of the property rather than a fixed calendar: before the summer holidays in a family home, before the owners return to a second home, or before each winter and summer season in an alpine chalet. Each visit covers firmware and software updates and a check of every processor, touchpanel, keypad and network device, together with a review of the equipment racks for temperature, ventilation and cabling.

Lighting scenes and schedules are verified and walked through with the household, so anything that no longer suits the way a room is used can be changed there and then. Wi-Fi coverage and network health are tested, heating and cooling configuration is reviewed, the security system is tested, and the cinema is checked against its calibration. Anything that needs attention is reported in writing with a clear recommendation, so there are no surprises.

The visit is also the natural moment to plan what comes next. A new room, an upgraded cinema, additional outdoor audio or a change of streaming service is far easier to design with the system’s current state in front of us, and the work can be scheduled for when the property is least disrupted.

Home Cinema Aftercare

A cinema room is the part of a home most sensitive to change. Speakers settle, furnishings are moved, sources are updated and new formats arrive, and each of those can move the room away from the performance it was calibrated to deliver. Our cinema aftercare includes an annual system health check and calibration review, laser health monitoring for the projector, Kaleidescape server management, programming updates for the Crestron and Lutron control of the room, and fault diagnosis and repair — remotely where possible and on site when required.

We look after cinema rooms we have built and rooms installed by other companies. For rooms that have fallen behind current audio and video formats, or that were installed to a standard we would not put our own name to, we offer full takeover, renovation and recalibration.

Calibration is the thread that runs through all of it. Every cinema we install is calibrated in the finished room as part of the handover, and our aftercare keeps that calibration current as the room and its equipment change. More on our home cinema calibration →

Networks: The Foundation of a Reliable System

Most of the instability people experience in a smart home is not caused by the touchscreens or the light switches. It comes from the network underneath them. A modern property carries 4K video, CCTV, multi-room audio, climate control and dozens of guest devices at the same time, and a consumer-grade router was never designed for that load.

That is why we install enterprise-grade networks from the outset, using managed, business-class switches and enterprise wireless access points from systems such as Ubiquiti UniFi and Cisco. Our maintenance plans include scheduled network optimisation, so the network stays fast and stable as a household’s devices and data needs grow, rather than slowly becoming the weak link in an otherwise excellent system.

Network health is also central to monitoring. A device that drops off the network, a link that degrades or an access point that stops responding is visible to us as it happens, so it can be dealt with before it shows up as an unreliable keypad or a buffering stream. Second Homes, Rentals and International Properties

For properties that are often empty, aftercare matters more, not less. A smart home’s most important job in a second home may be what it does when nobody is there: watching the heating, the network and the security system, and telling us when something needs attention. For seasonal and rental properties we carry out pre-arrival system checks, so every system is verified and working before the owners or their guests arrive, however long the property has been unoccupied.

We support systems wherever we have installed them, including Dubai, the French Alps and West Africa, and remote support is the default for international properties. Some clients have resident staff who can carry out simple physical tasks under our remote guidance; others need an engineer on site. In the Portes du Soleil, our Montriond office provides engineers locally, and our partner network covers other alpine areas.

For larger systems and international properties we keep hot spares for critical components at the property. A touchpanel or processor held in reserve on site means that a hardware failure does not become a system failure, even when the nearest replacement would otherwise be days away. System Takeovers

A large part of our support work involves systems we did not install. The reasons vary: the original installer has closed, the programmer is no longer available, the system has never worked properly, or it worked once and gradually degraded as devices were updated and the programming was never maintained. We take over Crestron systems, Lutron systems installed by other dealers, home cinemas and complete smart homes, in the UK and abroad.

Every takeover follows the same process. We audit the existing hardware and programming, establish what is working and what is not, fix faults at their cause rather than working around them, replace outdated hardware only where it is genuinely needed, and bring the system to a standard we are confident to support. Takeovers are not rewrites by default — where the existing programming is sound we fix what needs fixing and leave the rest, and we tell the owner which applies before any work begins.

Once the system is stable, it is enrolled in our remote monitoring service and documented in the same way as one of our own installations, so it can be supported properly from then on. Upgrades Without Re-cabling

Technology moves on even when a system is working perfectly. A cinema installed a decade ago may not decode the latest immersive audio formats, and video distribution designed for HD may need to carry 4K or more. Because our systems are built on a robust, well-documented cabling infrastructure, upgrades of this kind can usually be made by replacing equipment at the rack and in the rooms rather than by opening walls and ceilings.

That approach is what allows a property to move from one generation of technology to the next without the cost and disruption of re-wiring. A major Cheshire estate we commissioned in 2011 has made exactly that transition: the interiors have changed, but the cabling, rack layout and hardware choices made at the start have carried the system from early-generation automation into today’s cloud-connected platforms.

Aftercare is where those upgrades are planned. Because we already know the system, its cabling and how the household uses it, we can recommend the changes that make a real difference, sequence them sensibly and carry them out with the least disruption to the house.

Documentation That Stays With the House

Every system we install or take over is fully documented: equipment schedules, rack layouts, network configuration, programming files and the scenes agreed with the household. The documentation is updated after every change, so support never depends on any one engineer’s memory.

Good documentation protects the owner as much as it helps us. A well-documented system is far quicker to diagnose, simpler to extend and much easier to hand over if the property is sold or the household’s needs change. It is also the reason that a call to our team starts with an engineer who can see exactly how the system was built.

For estate managers and house managers, the same records mean that a new member of staff can be briefed quickly and that any work carried out by other trades — decorators, joiners, electricians — can be checked against what is installed before it causes a problem.

Long-Term Reliability

Reliability over decades is the clearest test of an installer. Many of the systems we commissioned fifteen years ago are still running with the same speed and responsiveness as the day they were handed over, and we are still maintaining installations from our first years in business. That longevity is the result of deliberate choices — premium hardware, robust cabling, centralised equipment racks and enterprise-grade networks — followed by aftercare that keeps those choices working.

As 5 x Crestron Integration Award winners, a record unique in EMEA, we are often asked what separates an award-winning system from an ordinary one. Much of the answer is what happens after the handover: a system that is still performing correctly years later is a system that has been properly looked after.

Whether we installed your system or you have inherited one, the starting point is the same — a conversation about how the house is used and what it needs. Contact us to discuss aftercare for your property.

Crestron system takeover, Canaletto Tower, City Road, London

Case Study: Taking Over a Developer-Installed System, City Road

This apartment in the Canaletto Tower on City Road already had a developer-installed Crestron system controlling lighting, audio distribution and intercom. It was inflexible and unintuitive in daily use, so the owners called us in to unlock what it was actually capable of. Rather than stripping it out, we reprogrammed the existing hardware and added targeted upgrades where they made a real difference.

The lighting was reprogrammed for activity-based scenes recalled from a single keypad button or set from touchpanels and roaming iPads, and Crestron blind controllers brought the Silent Gliss electric blinds into the same scenes. The Bluetooth-only audio was replaced with an Autonomic MMS music server and Origin Acoustics ceiling speakers, with easy room grouping for parties, while Crestron Digital Media now distributes Sky Q and Apple TV in 4K to the master bedroom and living room.

The half-finished HVAC programme was properly commissioned, down to the master bathroom towel rail warming with the lights. A system that was frustrating to use has become one that simply works, every time — the standard we bring to every system we take over. Read the full case study →
