Technology in the Alps Demands a Different Approach

Standard home technology installations rarely survive an Alpine environment. We have spent years refining our approach to the specific demands of chalet construction and chalet living, and four constraints shape almost every specification we write.

Extreme temperatures. Equipment must be specified to operate reliably through winter shutdowns, rapid reheating, and the humidity cycles that come with mountain living.

Chalet construction. Thick timber frames, stone walls, and multi-floor layouts require specialist survey and cabling strategies, and wireless-first design where retrofitting is essential.

Arrival-ready systems. Chalet owners arrive wanting to relax, not troubleshoot. Remote monitoring means we often resolve issues before the owner even lands.

Connectivity constraints. Alpine broadband varies enormously between resorts. We design networks that perform brilliantly within real-world constraints, not ideal lab conditions.

WiFi and Networking

Reliable, high-speed WiFi is no longer optional in a luxury chalet; it is an expectation. Whether your guests are streaming 4K content in the cinema room, video-calling from the hot tub terrace, or managing smart home controls from their phones, the network must perform without fail across every corner of the property. We design and install enterprise-grade WiFi solutions using access points from leading manufacturers such as Cisco Meraki, Ruckus, and Pakedge. Lutron Lighting Control

The atmosphere of a chalet is defined by its lighting. A well-designed lighting control system allows you to transform the mood of every space, from the bright, warm welcome as you arrive from the slopes, to the intimate ambience of a candlelit dinner, to the dramatic backdrop of a cinema evening, all at the touch of a single button or automatically, as you walk through the door. We are Lutron specialists, designing and installing their full range of lighting control systems in luxury residential properties worldwide. Multi-Room Audio and Whole-Chalet Music

Music is what makes a chalet feel lived in. Coming in from the slopes to a playlist already running in the boot room, the same track following you up to the bedroom, dinner-party background music in the dining room while the spa area plays something entirely different: this is what a properly designed multi-room audio and video system delivers. Every room can play its own source or share one with the rest of the chalet, and every zone is controlled from a wall keypad, a touchscreen or the same app that runs the rest of the property. Chalet construction shapes the design. Timber frames, stone walls and multi-level layouts mean speaker positions, cable routes and amplifier locations need planning at the start of the project. In new builds and renovations we specify in-ceiling and in-wall speakers so the audio is heard but not seen, with all amplification and video distribution equipment centralised in a ventilated rack that is easy to maintain. Where walls cannot be opened up in an existing chalet, we use networked audio and wireless-first options so the system can be added without major disruption. Outdoor zones for the terrace, hot tub and balcony use weather-rated speakers chosen to cope with freezing temperatures and snow.

Video is distributed on the same principle. Satellite, streaming and media sources sit in the equipment room and are available on any screen in the chalet, so nobody needs a box under every television. Audio and video are integrated into the whole-home control system, so a single button can start the evening playlist, set the lighting scene and adjust the heating. Because every chalet system is monitored remotely, we can check the audio and video network before you arrive and resolve most faults without a site visit.

Our Montriond office puts our engineers in the Portes du Soleil year-round, so chalets in Morzine, Les Gets, Avoriaz and Châtel are designed, installed and supported locally. For resorts further afield, from Megève and Chamonix to Courchevel, Méribel, Val d’Isère and Verbier, every project is designed in full and pre-built before installation, keeping time on site to a minimum. Every chalet we support is monitored remotely, so faults are picked up even when the property is empty between visits.

Custom Controls was founded in 1998, and Custom Controls EURL quickly followed. We have spent over 25 years delivering high-end home automation and cinema installations for private clients across the UK, Middle East, and Europe. Our Alps team is based in Montriond, in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, and combines fluent French speakers with fully trained Crestron programmers and field engineers.

Case Study: Morzine Chalet WiFi and Security Install

A substantial chalet in the Morzine area presented a classic challenge: thick stone and timber construction, six floors including a basement cinema and rooftop terrace, and an owner who demanded flawless connectivity throughout, including the garage and garden. Our solution combined a fully wired PoE network with carefully positioned enterprise access points, delivering consistent coverage across the entire property and integrating with the CCTV and smart home systems.

Existing network cabling is used first and mesh access points are added only where needed, and the installation works with ADSL, fibre, Starlink and 5G connections, sometimes two together for redundancy. CCTV, door access and intercoms can sit on the same network, and for rental properties a keypad by the front door can generate a unique access code for each guest.

Châtel chalet basement home cinema room, Portes du Soleil

Case Study: Châtel Chalet Home Cinema Install

A private home cinema built into unused basement space during the construction of a ski chalet in Châtel, in the valley between the main ski lifts and the town. The room is 5.8m wide and 6.5m long with a head height of 2.4m, and the screen sits on the wall by the door so that the entrance stays in sight from the seats. A Screen Excellence 3.8m ultra-wide screen with a 2.35:1 ratio is filled by a Sony VW7000 laser projector, which has 3,200 lumens of brightness and scales widescreen sources to the ultra-wide screen.

Six seats fit the width of the room: a two-seater sofa flanked by two cinema chairs, with bean bags for extra viewers. A Lutron single-room lighting system lets the clients set up lighting scenes and dim the lights from the comfort of the cinema seats with a remote control, and Lutron’s wireless Palladiom system provides scene-based lighting across the chalet, including the terrace and hot tub area, without recabling.

Across the chalet, Crestron automation controls lighting, heating, multi-room AV and the cinema from a single interface. The client travels from the UK and wanted the chalet to be prepared for every visit, with no manual adjustment on arrival, and remote access and proactive monitoring by our Alps team keep the system performing regardless of the season. Megève chalet private cinema room, Haute-Savoie

Case Study: Megève Chalet Home Cinema Install

Described by the client as “the ultimate home cinema for the ultimate outdoor playground,” this private cinema room in Megève was designed to deliver the full theatrical experience within the character of an Alpine chalet. The chalet is a 600m² eight-bedroom home with ski-in ski-out access, an indoor pool and spa complex, a heliport and a huge garage.

The cinema is designed around a 4m curved projector screen and seating for eight, custom designed and made for the room. Projection is by Sony’s BRAVIA Projector 9, a native 4K laser model rated at 3,400 lumens, and the sound comes from an 11.4.2 Dolby Atmos system of Artcoustic loudspeakers hidden behind wool-lined fabric walls and the acoustically transparent screen.

  • Do you install smart home systems in alpine chalets?
    Yes. Custom Controls have an Alps office based in Montriond, Haute-Savoie and have been installing smart home, home cinema and WiFi systems in luxury alpine chalets since the late 1990s. We work across the French and Swiss Alps including Morzine, Méribel, Courchevel, Verbier and Zermatt.
  • What smart home system is best for an alpine chalet?
    For alpine chalets, we most frequently recommend Lutron RadioRA 3 for lighting and shading, as its fully wireless architecture is ideally suited to historic timber-frame chalets where cable access is limited. For whole-home automation, Crestron Home provides seamless control of AV, climate, security and access. All systems are configured for remote monitoring from our UK offices.
  • Can you provide remote support for chalet smart home systems?
    Yes. Remote monitoring is standard on all our alpine installations. We can diagnose and resolve the vast majority of issues from our UK and Alps offices without requiring a site visit, which is particularly valuable for properties used seasonally. We are notified of system issues automatically and respond proactively.
  • Can you install WiFi in a stone-walled alpine chalet?
    Yes, though thick stone walls require careful planning. We survey every property before specifying, designing the access point layout and network backbone to provide consistent coverage throughout the chalet. For chalets where running new cables is impractical, we can often use existing cabling infrastructure or design an enterprise mesh solution that outperforms consumer products significantly.
  • Can equipment cope with Alpine winters and seasonal shutdowns?
    Yes, if it is specified for it. Equipment must operate reliably through winter shutdowns, rapid reheating and the humidity cycles that come with mountain living, so we specify for those conditions rather than for a standard installation.
  • Can you check the systems before we arrive for the season?
    Yes. We offer pre-season and pre-arrival system checks, ensuring keypads, processors and blinds are fully operational before the first guests arrive, however long the chalet has been unoccupied.
