Smart Home Installer Alps — Crestron & Lutron for Alpine Chalets

Award-Winning Smart Home Design and Control for Alpine Chalets

Custom Controls are a UK-based smart home installer with an Alps office in Montriond, Haute-Savoie — at 297 Route du Cret, 74110. We have been delivering bespoke Crestron and Lutron smart home systems for luxury alpine chalets since the early 2000s. We are five-time Crestron Integration Award winners and hold Crestron Dealer of Distinction status. Our Montriond office covers the Portes du Soleil region directly; we also work across Haute-Savoie, Savoie and the Swiss Alps through our UK delivery methodology and trusted local partner network.

The smart home requirements of an alpine chalet are distinct from those of a primary residence. The property may be occupied for as few as eight to ten weeks per year. It may be managed as a rental property during unoccupied periods. Its owners may be in the UK, Dubai or anywhere else in the world when an issue arises. And it needs to arrive — every time, automatically — at a state of warmth, light and welcome that makes the mountain experience the best it can be. These are exactly the requirements that Crestron is designed to fulfil.

Smart Home for Alpine Chalets — What We Deliver

Crestron Home Automation. The central intelligence of every Custom Controls alpine smart home. Crestron manages heating, AV distribution, lighting, security, access control and cinema — from a single interface on a Crestron touchpanel, iPad or smartphone. The defining feature for alpine use is geofenced arrival preparation: the Crestron system monitors the owner or guests’ location and begins heating the chalet, activating lighting and warming the ski room automatically as they approach the property. Every time, without any manual action.

Smart Home Crestron Alpine Chalet

Heating Management. Alpine chalets are typically heated by underfloor systems across multiple zones. In unoccupied mode, Crestron maintains each zone at frost protection temperature — preventing freeze damage without the energy waste of heating the whole chalet to comfort temperature throughout the offseason. Before each arrival, zones ramp to comfort temperatures in the correct sequence. The energy saving from intelligent heating management in a chalet that may be unoccupied for 40+ weeks per year is substantial — regularly 30–40% of the annual heating bill.

Lutron Lighting & Shading. Scene-based lighting across every room in the chalet, with scenes designed for the specific rhythm of alpine chalet life — arrival, ski-day morning, afternoon rest, dining, cinema and departure. Lutron Homeworks QSX for new build chalets; Lutron RadioRA 3 wireless for retrofit installations. Sivoia motorised blackout blinds in all bedrooms. Our Morzine chalet design study shows how sun and mountain horizon analysis shapes the shading, lighting and ventilation of a new-build chalet.

Whole-Home Audio Video. Music in every room of the chalet simultaneously — or different sources in each zone independently. Crestron NVX for 4K video distribution to every TV in the property; Bluesound or Crestron NAX for multi-room audio; Kaleidescape for the cinema room source. Ease of use is the priority for a chalet that hosts a constantly changing roster of guests: every system supports direct streaming from a guest’s own phone via AirPlay or Bluetooth with no setup required, and for owners and serious music listeners we integrate the Roon app, giving access to high-resolution streaming alongside any music library stored locally on the chalet’s network — all from the same interface used for everything else in the property. The rhythm of chalet life — guest turnover, après-ski, hot tub and terrace use — calls for a different approach to zoning than a primary residence. Home Cinema. Cinema rooms are the most-requested technology addition to alpine chalets. From a compact cinema room in a Morzine chalet to the 11.4.2 Dolby Atmos installation in Megève, we design, install and calibrate every alpine cinema room to the same standard as our London and Cheshire installations. Enterprise WiFi & Networking. Alpine chalet construction — thick stone, heavy timber, reinforced concrete — is one of the most challenging environments for WiFi. Consumer systems consistently fail to provide reliable coverage throughout a multi-floor chalet with these materials. We design and install Ubiquiti UniFi enterprise WiFi networks with wired PoE backbones across all floors, providing consistent, fast coverage everywhere in the chalet — including the ski room, boot room and garage. Security and Access Control for Rental Chalets. For chalets managed as rental properties, Crestron access control with time-limited codes for each rental party transforms the guest experience — no physical key collection, no key safe, no lockbox. The rental agency issues a code before arrival; it expires automatically at checkout. Owners can view every entry and exit in the full audit log. CCTV, perimeter detection and alarm monitoring integrate within the same Crestron system.

Unoccupied Property Management, Maintenance & System Takeovers

The smart home’s most important function in an alpine chalet may be what it does when no one is there. Every Custom Controls alpine installation is enrolled in remote monitoring from our UK operations — we receive automatic alerts when any element of the system degrades, when a heating zone drops below its set point, when a network device goes offline or when an unexpected entry event is logged. Most issues are resolved remotely without any site visit. For issues that require physical access, our Montriond office covers the Portes du Soleil region and our local partner network covers all other alpine areas. We also regularly take over chalet smart home systems installed by other companies — auditing the existing installation, fixing faults, reprogramming heating and lighting to a standard we are happy to support, and enrolling the chalet in our remote monitoring service. Smart Home Support & Maintenance Alps

We offer pre-season maintenance visits — scheduled before each winter and summer season — covering the full system: heating configuration review, Crestron programming updates, Lutron scene verification, cinema room calibration check, WiFi network health and security system test. Annual alpine smart home maintenance contracts cover these visits alongside unlimited remote support and priority response throughout the season.

Between visits, every chalet we look after is monitored remotely, so a heating fault, a network outage or a failed device is flagged to us rather than discovered by the owners on arrival. Most issues are resolved remotely from our Montriond office, and engineers are on site in the Portes du Soleil when a visit is needed. For owners who let their chalets, the same service keeps the system ready for each change-over of guests.

Alps Smart Home Case Studies

Châtel chalet basement home cinema room, Portes du Soleil

Case Study: Châtel Chalet Home Cinema Install

A private home cinema built into unused basement space during the construction of a ski chalet in Châtel, in the valley between the main ski lifts and the town. The room is 5.8m wide and 6.5m long with a head height of 2.4m, and the screen sits on the wall by the door so that the entrance stays in sight from the seats.

A Screen Excellence 3.8m ultra-wide screen with a 2.35:1 ratio is filled by a Sony VW7000 laser projector, which has 3,200 lumens of brightness and scales widescreen sources to the ultra-wide screen. Six seats fit the width of the room: a two-seater sofa flanked by two cinema chairs, with bean bags for extra viewers.

A Lutron single-room lighting system lets the clients set up lighting scenes and dim the lights from the comfort of the cinema seats with a remote control. Read the full write-up →

Megève chalet private cinema room, Haute-Savoie

Case Study: Megève Chalet Home Cinema Install

A private cinema in a 600m² eight-bedroom chalet in Megève with ski-in ski-out access, an indoor pool and spa complex, a heliport and a huge garage. The room is designed around a 4m curved projector screen and seating for eight, custom designed and made for the room.

Projection is by Sony’s BRAVIA Projector 9, a native 4K laser model rated at 3,400 lumens, and the sound comes from an 11.4.2 Dolby Atmos system of Artcoustic loudspeakers hidden behind wool-lined fabric walls and the acoustically transparent screen.

The room has been extensively acoustically modelled, and every element of it, from screen and projection to processing, loudspeakers, acoustics and seating, is designed as a single system rather than a collection of individual products. The hand-stretched wall fabric is fitted to a custom track system, creating a shallow void around the room that houses the speakers and acoustic treatments. Read the full case study →

Morzine chalet WiFi and security installation, Portes du Soleil

Case Study: Morzine Chalet WiFi and Security Install

High-end WiFi for chalets in Morzine, Les Gets and the Vallée d’Aulps, designed from the chalet’s floor plans: a heat map of coverage overlays the access points, then a site survey adjusts the design for any pre-installed cabling and the preferred locations for access points, such as behind TVs or on top of cupboards.

Existing network cabling is used first and mesh access points are added only where needed, and the installation works with ADSL, fibre, Starlink and 5G connections, sometimes two together for redundancy. CCTV, door access and intercoms can sit on the same network, and for rental properties a keypad by the front door can generate a unique access code for each guest.

The whole system can be set to auto-optimise and auto-update, and a management portal lets us make changes remotely and even view the WiFi experience of individual clients. Read the full write-up →

Alps Smart Home FAQs

  • Do you install smart home systems in alpine chalets?
Yes. We have an Alps office in Montriond, Haute-Savoie and have been installing smart home, home cinema and WiFi systems in luxury alpine chalets since the late 1990s. We work across the French and Swiss Alps including Morzine, Méribel, Courchevel, Verbier and Zermatt.
  • What smart home system is best for an alpine chalet?
We most frequently recommend Lutron RadioRA 3 for lighting and shading, as its fully wireless architecture suits historic timber-frame chalets where cable access is limited. For whole-home automation, Crestron Home provides seamless control of AV, climate, security and access, with remote monitoring from our UK offices.
  • Can you provide remote support for chalet smart home systems?
Yes. Remote monitoring is standard on all our alpine installations, and we can resolve the vast majority of issues from our UK and Alps offices without a site visit, which is particularly valuable for properties used seasonally.
  • Can you install WiFi in a stone-walled alpine chalet?
Yes, though thick stone walls require careful planning. We survey every property before specifying, designing the access point layout and network backbone to provide consistent coverage throughout the chalet.
  • Can the same team look after my homes in the UK and the Alps?
Yes. Owners with homes in London or Cheshire as well as the Alps can have every property designed and supported by the same team.
  • Can a smart home system manage an alpine chalet when it is unoccupied?
Yes — and this is one of the primary reasons alpine chalet owners install Crestron. In unoccupied mode, Crestron maintains frost protection temperatures, monitors for alarms and faults, logs all access events and sends alerts to the owner for any anomaly.
  • Can Crestron pre-heat an alpine chalet before we arrive?
Yes. The Crestron geofencing system monitors the owner or guests’ location via the app and automatically initiates the arrival sequence when they are a set distance from the chalet.
  • Can you take over an existing smart home system in an alpine chalet?
Yes. We regularly take over chalet smart home systems installed by other companies — auditing the existing installation, fixing faults, reprogramming heating and lighting.
  • Do you offer pre-season smart home maintenance for alpine chalets?
Yes. We offer pre-season maintenance visits scheduled before each winter and summer season.
  • Can Crestron manage access for rental guests at an alpine chalet?
Yes. Crestron access control with time-limited codes for each rental party eliminates the physical key handover.
