Eight-Seat Home Theater with a 5m Curved Screen

This design for a home theater room in Dubai encompasses everything we do well — considered design, exceptional audio and a genuinely striking visual result. The brief transformed an unused basement room — approximately 7m × 6m with a 3m head height — into a stunning eight-person home theater. The client asked specifically for something “aesthetically different” while still delivering the very best home theater experience available. The centrepiece is a 5.08m curved acoustically transparent projector screen, concealing an extensive Artcoustic speaker array behind it — five acoustic arrays and four subwoofers — with a further six array speakers on the walls handling surround sound and four more in the ceiling for height channels, together forming a full 11.4.4 Dolby Atmos configuration.

Sources and Projection

A Sony 4K laser projector displays content from every available source — satellite TV for live sport, Apple TV for streaming, and a Kaleidescape movie server for reference-quality film playback well beyond Blu-ray. This is a comprehensively specified home theater, built to perform as well as it looks. Kaleidescape is the reference source for a room at this level: movie bitrates of up to 110 Mbps, roughly ten times higher than typical streaming services, with bit-for-bit lossless Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD and DTS:X — exactly what the mixing engineers recorded.

Every element of this room — screen, projection, speakers, acoustics, seating and lighting — was designed together as a single scheme rather than selected separately. The colour palette, the placement of each speaker array and the position of every seat were fixed at the same time, drawing on each of our core cinema services. These are the services behind the design.

Fabric Lined Walls and Acoustic Treatments

The curved walls and the clean finished aesthetic are made possible by specialist fabric walling. Stud walls allow speakers and acoustic treatment to be positioned anywhere the design calls for, with the entire surface then finished in specialist acoustic fabric. This approach delivers a genuinely clean result — no hardware visible anywhere in the finished room — without any compromise to the acoustic performance the Artcoustic array is capable of.

As on every fabric wall we specify, the construction is adapted to what each section of wall needs to conceal. Wherever speakers sit directly behind the finish, an open-weave acoustic cloth is chosen alongside the speaker specification so it doesn’t dull high frequencies on their way into the room, while the wall behind the screen is given full, dark, absorbent coverage so sound isn’t reflected straight back into the room. Panels that conceal speakers are built to be removable, so a future service visit never means cutting into a finished wall.

Artcoustic 11.4.4 Dolby Atmos

The front stage behind the 5.08m screen uses five Artcoustic arrays and four subwoofers, with six further arrays on the walls for the surround channels and four in the ceiling bulkhead for the Atmos height layer. Artcoustic’s high sensitivity makes reference-level dynamics achievable with comparatively modest amplifier power, and their array speakers meet and exceed the Dolby Atmos output requirement of 105–115dB at the reference listening position. Hidden behind the acoustically transparent screen and the fabric walls, the arrays disappear entirely, leaving nothing on view but the room itself.

Home Theater Seating, Lighting & Room Fit-Out

The colour palette established in the walls continues through the seating, carpets and ceiling, with a bulkhead concealing the height channel Atmos speakers, air-conditioning ducting and a cove light. The ceiling itself features a star effect that the client can dim independently through the lighting control system. Advanced lighting scenes bring the room to a preset level when a film is paused or stopped, dimming automatically again once playback resumes.

The eight home theater seats are arranged in two rows of four, with the rear row raised on a platform so every seat has a clear sightline to the curved screen. As on every cinema we design, row positions, row heights and seat configurations were fixed during the layout design phase, ensuring correct sightlines from every position and enough spacing for each seat to recline without impacting the row behind.

Home Theater Design in Dubai

Dubai is our most established international market, where we regularly run two to three simultaneous projects and work with a trusted network of interior architects, main contractors and specialist trades. Our Dubai cinema work follows the same methodology as every international project: racks, processors and AV equipment are fully assembled, programmed and tested at our UK workshop before shipment, so what arrives on site is a finished, tested system. Every international installation is also configured for remote access and monitoring, so the system can be diagnosed, adjusted and updated from our UK offices in the vast majority of cases.

Frequently Asked Questions — Dubai Home Theater Room

Why use a curved projector screen?
A curved screen, like the 5.08m Screen Excellence installation in this room, keeps every part of the image at a consistent distance from the viewer’s eye, reducing geometric distortion at the edges and creating a more immersive, enveloping field of view — particularly valuable at this scale.

How is an 11.4.4 surround configuration achieved without visible speakers?
This room uses Artcoustic arrays positioned behind the acoustically transparent screen, within fabric-wrapped stud walls around the room, and within a bulkhead concealing the height channels — eleven main channels, four subwoofers and four height channels with no hardware visible anywhere in the finished space.

Can the lighting respond automatically to the film playing?
Yes. This room’s lighting control automatically brings the lights to a preset level when a film is paused or stopped, and dims again once playback resumes — alongside a dimmable star effect ceiling the client can adjust independently.

Which sources does the home theater use?
A Kaleidescape movie server for reference-quality film playback with lossless audio, Apple TV for streaming and satellite TV for live sport, all displayed by a Sony 4K laser projector on the 5.08m curved screen.
