Smart Home Installer London — Crestron & Lutron Home Automation

Smart Home Installation in London for Large Luxury Properties

Custom Controls are a London-based smart home installer and home automation company with 25 years of experience delivering bespoke Crestron and Lutron systems for luxury residential properties across the capital. Unique in the EMEA – 5 x Crestron Award Winners. Dealer of Distinction. Our London office is in the City of London, EC2V, and our engineers are active across all prime London residential postcodes and the wider Home Counties.

We do not offer smart home as one service among many. It is the core of everything we do — and has been since 1998. Every system we design is bespoke, every programme is written from scratch, and every installation is pre-built and tested at our workshop before arriving on site. Our London projects range from mansion flats and mews houses to Georgian townhouses and new build developments, many in conservation areas where every keypad and speaker has to suit a period interior.

Smart Home Installation in London — What We Deliver

Crestron Home Automation. The central intelligence. Crestron manages everything — lighting, AV, climate, security, access and blinds — from a single bespoke interface. We install both Crestron Home (faster deployment, ideal for most London residential projects) and Crestron Custom (fully bespoke programming for complex multi-floor or multi-building projects).

Smart home installation in London

Lutron Lighting & Shading. Lutron Homeworks QSX for new builds and major London renovations. Lutron RadioRA 3 — fully wireless, no rewiring — for retrofit projects in existing London homes, period properties and listed buildings. Sivoia motorised blinds and curtains for privacy, solar gain management and scene control.

Whole-Home Audio Video. Any source to any room in the London property. Crestron NVX for 4K video distribution; Crestron NAX or Bluesound for multi-room audio; Kaleidescape for reference-quality cinema source material; Sonos for streaming convenience in every zone. Ease of use is the priority: anyone in the household streams directly from their own phone via AirPlay or Bluetooth with no setup, and for serious listening we integrate the Roon app, giving access to high-resolution streaming alongside any music library stored locally on the property’s network, all from the same interface as everything else. Home Cinema. Dedicated cinema rooms, living room cinema systems and media rooms — acoustically designed, installed and calibrated by our own team. We specialise in basement cinema rooms, living room retractable screen systems and loft cinema conversions across London.

Enterprise WiFi & Network. Ubiquiti UniFi or Cisco Meraki access points on a wired PoE backbone, with VLAN segmentation separating smart home, personal, security and guest traffic. Essential for London townhouses with thick masonry construction and basement levels.

Security & Access Control. CCTV, video intercom, intruder alarm and smart access control integrated within the Crestron system. For London properties with multiple entry points — front door, tradesman’s entrance, basement access, garage — Crestron manages each with individual credentials from a single interface.

Climate Control. Underfloor heating, air conditioning and heat pumps under the same Crestron interface as the lighting and AV, with room-by-room setpoints and schedules. In our Baker Street project the air conditioning and underfloor heating can be switched on from abroad before the family arrives from the airport.

How a London Smart Home Project Runs

Every London project begins with a consultation and a survey, then a full system design covering the control interface, lighting, AV zones, network, security and climate, coordinated with the architect, interior designer and electrical contractor. Sources are centralised in one equipment rack rather than placed room by room, so there are no boxes or cables in the living spaces and anything added to the rack becomes available everywhere at once. Racks are fully wired, programmed and tested at our workshop before they arrive on site, which shortens time on site in properties where access is constrained.

Programming is written around how the household actually lives, not from a template. Our Baker Street client turned down training because the interface was self-evident, and it is regularly used by non-English-speaking staff; that is the standard we hold every programme to. At handover the system is enrolled in remote monitoring, and the same engineers who designed it support it afterwards.

Smart Home System Takeovers London

London has a significant concentration of smart home systems installed by companies that have since closed, moved on or been unable to continue supporting their installations. System takeovers are a major part of our London workload. We audit the existing system, diagnose what is working and what is not, reprogramme to our standard, replace outdated hardware where necessary, integrate previously disconnected systems into a unified interface and enrol the system in our remote monitoring service. If you have a smart home in London that is underperforming, partially broken, or no longer supported by the original installer, contact our London office. Smart home system takeover in London

Our Canaletto Tower project on City Road is a typical example. The apartment had a developer-installed Crestron system controlling lighting, audio and intercom that was inflexible and unintuitive in daily use. We reprogrammed the existing lighting hardware for scene-setting from touchpanels and iPads, added Crestron control of the Silent Gliss electric blinds, upgraded the audio to an Autonomic music server with Origin Acoustics ceiling speakers, and recommissioned the half-finished HVAC programme — including a towel rail that warms with the bathroom lights. Crestron Digital Media now distributes Sky Q and Apple TV in 4K to the master bedroom and living room, where a Leon soundbar under a 65-inch Samsung OLED, a Leon subwoofer and an Anthem AVR with ARC room correction sit in a custom Italian-built unit with a sliding door, so the room is completely clean when the system is off. The owners called us in to unlock what the system was actually capable of, and it now simply works, every time, exactly as they need it to.

Smart Home Support & Maintenance London

Every smart home system we install in London is enrolled in our remote monitoring service from day one. We receive automatic alerts when any element of the system degrades and resolve the majority remotely before the client notices anything. We offer annual smart home maintenance contracts covering scheduled preventative maintenance visits, software updates, programming refinements, system health checks and priority response. Our London support clients include some of the most technically complex residential installations in the capital — systems we have been actively maintaining since the early 2000s.

London Areas We Serve

Our London smart home installation team covers all London postcodes and the wider South East: Mayfair, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Kensington, Belgravia, Notting Hill, Bayswater, Marylebone, St John’s Wood, Primrose Hill, Hampstead, Highgate, Islington, Clerkenwell, Shoreditch, Canary Wharf, Wapping, Bermondsey, Richmond, Wimbledon, Putney, Fulham, Barnes, Wandsworth, Clapham, Battersea, and across Surrey, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Essex and Kent. The team works from our office at 88 Wood Street in the City, so design, installation and support stay with the same engineers, and most support requests are handled remotely through our monitoring service.

London Smart Home Projects

The projects below show the range of our London smart home work, from a single apartment to whole townhouses and a five-star hotel. Each one is described in full on its case study page.

Crestron smart home kitchen in Primrose Hill, London

Primrose Hill Townhouse

A four-floor townhouse run from a single Crestron iPad interface, with eight audio zones, four video zones and two surround sound zones fed from centralised Virgin Media TiVo boxes, Apple TVs and an Autonomic music server. The formal living room has a retractable screen and a SIM2 projector housed in joinery built by our in-house carpenters, with Lutron Grafik Eye lighting integrated into the same interface. Pakedge WiFi covers every floor, and a BPT intercom panel on each level answers the front door video entry system.

Baker Street Townhouse

A modern townhouse near Regent’s Park that was the first Crestron Digital Media installation in the UK and won the pan-European 2010 Crestron Integration Award for Most Innovative Control Solution. Any source, including Sky HD, ArabSat, Apple TV, Kaleidescape and the CCTV cameras, can be sent to any of eight TVs, with full Crestron lighting control, Axis IP CCTV and Hitachi air conditioning on the same touchpanels. The project became an official Crestron case study.

Claridge’s Hotel Penthouses, Mayfair

Crestron-controlled Loewe multimedia systems in two penthouse apartments of three rooms each, inside listed interiors where no new cable routes could be created. Wireless Crestron TPS-6X touchpanels, branded with the Claridge’s crest, give guests of any nationality control of Loewe TVs, Blu-ray, Sky HD and hotel TV. The project won the Crestron Integration Award for Best High Rise Project in Europe and became an official Crestron Digital Media case study.

Music Industry Home, Hampstead

An 18-month project in which we acted as AV consultant and integrator for a family home owned by a well-known figure in the music industry. Media input plates let sources from the home studio be shared with any room, vinyl from the music room can play in the kitchen and living room at once, and Future Automation lifts hide the living room TV. Three centralised equipment racks keep all hardware out of the living spaces, and an attic cinema with a JVC projector and hidden Artcoustic speakers completes the house.

Mayfair Apartment

An ultra-discreet Crestron DigitalMedia system distributing Sky HD, Blu-ray and Apple TV to four televisions, with plastered-in ceiling speakers in every audio zone. Crestron lighting and curtain control in the open-plan living room and kitchen share the same custom iPad interface as the AV. The system was delivered within the original budget.

Pimlico Townhouse

One Crestron system serving three very different rooms: a high-end listening room with Bowers & Wilkins floor-standing speakers and a dedicated amplifier, a family kitchen and a basement cinema with a 75-inch Samsung and Artcoustic surround sound. Five audio zones and two video zones draw on the same centralised rack, and every room is controlled from bespoke iPad interfaces. Rooms can play in sync as a party mode from kitchen to garden, or completely independently.

Crestron smart home in a Georgian townhouse, Belgravia, London

Case Study: Crestron Townhouse, Belgravia

This Georgian townhouse in Belgravia is among the most feature-complete projects we have delivered in London. A Crestron Digital Media system distributes Sky HD, Apple TV and a music server to eight televisions and sixteen audio zones, controlled from in-wall and handheld Crestron 6-inch touchpanels. The in-ceiling speakers are plastered-in models, supported in stereo rooms by plastered-in Sonance subwoofers or Artcoustic subwoofers built into the cabinetwork.

Crestron lighting control runs across every room and floor, with more than 80 lighting channels and over 30 keypads, motorised blinds throughout and a whole-house-off scene by the front door. Crestron thermostats run underfloor heating and air conditioning room by room, an intercom connects the front door to every room, and cameras, alarm monitoring and access control sit in the same interface.

Three bespoke automations set the house apart: a kitchen glass wall that switches from transparent to opaque at a tap, a fully retractable glass roof above the kitchen, and a Bath-O-Matic system that fills the 220-litre master bath to a pre-set level and temperature, adding the client’s chosen bath oils, from the en suite touchpanel or an iPhone. Wireless Crestron lighting retrofit in a Kensington mews house, London

Case Study: Wireless Crestron Retrofit, Kensington Mews

This Kensington mews house was bought with a traditional switched lighting system, and the whole smart home project was delivered without rewiring it. Each light switch was replaced with a Crestron wireless dimmer, so every room gained full scene control on its existing electrical wiring, without a single cable pulled or a wall opened.

Scenes are recalled from wall keypads, iPads or Crestron MLX-3 handheld remotes, and the wireless keypads also control audio volume and motorised blinds in each room. Crestron audio video distribution carries music from the basement bar to the master en suite, with Sky HD, Apple TV and CCTV available on any TV, and input plates in the living areas let games consoles plug straight into the system.

The alarm is fully integrated: arming switches off all lights and AV, and disarming brings selected lights back on automatically. Whole-home WiFi carries the iPads and streaming sources throughout the house, and the sources themselves sit in a central rack out of sight. Read the full case study →
