For a Home Cinema are 4K and HDR important?

4K and HDR are both terms which directly affect picture quality and do become important when discussing big screen home cinema rooms. HDR stands for “High Dynamic Range” and basically means vivid colours and good contrast – these are both very good things and are worth ensuring that displays and sources are compatible.

4K refers to the resolution of the picture – 1080p and HD used to be the best available with a 1920 x 1080 resolution (the numbers of pixels height x width) so a 4K resolution (with pixels of 3840 x 2160) is a huge step up. More pixels equates to more fine detail and the difference is hugely noticeable on larger screens (anything over 55″). 8k screens and projectors are just coming through on to the market although source material is limited.
