Basement Home Cinema Room in Berkshire
A Small Room Delivering a Genuinely Big Cinema Experience
Sometimes a design simply works. This small room — by home cinema standards — measures just 3.6m x 3.6m, yet delivers a genuinely impressive cinema experience with a 3m wide projector screen and a full 7.2.2 surround sound system. The room benefits from our acoustic fabric wall system, which conceals acoustic treatment and speakers behind bespoke fabric panels. Seating is supplied by Cineak — two central chaise longues flanked by two cinema chairs with matching footstools.
The Home Cinema System
Despite the relatively compact footprint, this room shares its engineering DNA with our larger installations. The full speaker package is from Artcoustic — Spitfire 16-8 speakers handle the front left, centre and right channels, with two Artcoustic Sub 3 subwoofers (each with two long-throw 10″ drivers) installed between the front speakers. Four surround speakers and two height speakers, all Artcoustic Spitfire 8-4 models, complete a fully immersive sound stage, driven by an Audio Control XR-8 receiver. Sources including Apple TV 4K and Sky Q route through the Audio Control unit, which doubles as an HDMI switch alongside its 3D surround sound processing.
The Screen Excellence projector screen sits directly over the recessed Artcoustic front channels, with no loss of audio quality thanks to its acoustic transparency. At 3m wide, the screen would feel substantial in any room — in a space this size, it dominates the visual field. The seating distance from the screen is roughly equal to the screen’s width, a ratio that would have been unthinkable a few years ago but, with native 4K resolution throughout, now produces a genuinely immersive result.

The Basement Cinema Room Construction
This small room has a considerable amount of equipment carefully fitted in, and aesthetics were a primary concern throughout. Our team built custom stud walls — 100mm to the sides and rear, 300mm to the front — concealing every speaker and piece of acoustic treatment. We treated the ceiling the same way, concealing the height channels, before fitting our custom track system and finishing everything in acoustic fabric. The effect is a completely clean room that performs exceptionally well in every respect. A relatively simple lighting design illuminates each seat on entry, then gradually dims to a warm glow as the film begins.
Delivering Maximum Performance in a Compact Space
One of the most instructive projects in our portfolio — this 3.6m x 3.6m basement room in Berkshire demonstrates that exceptional cinema performance does not require an exceptional amount of space. What it requires is exceptionally careful design.
At 3.6m square this is among the smallest rooms in which we have installed a full home cinema system. The 3m wide projector screen fills the entire visual field from the viewing position — a screen-to-seat ratio that is actually more immersive than many larger rooms achieve with larger screens and greater viewing distances. The 7.2.2 Dolby Atmos surround system uses Artcoustic speakers integrated behind the room’s acoustic fabric wall system — every wall surface is wrapped in acoustic fabric over an internal structure that simultaneously houses the speaker drivers and absorbs early reflections. The result is a room that looks like a beautifully finished interior and performs like a purpose-engineered cinema.
The fabric wall system is one of our most effective tools for small rooms specifically. In a compact space, parallel reflective surfaces create comb filtering that blurs the stereo image and reduces clarity. By treating all four walls with absorptive fabric from floor to ceiling, the room’s acoustic behaviour is controlled to a degree that a partial treatment approach cannot achieve. The room measures small; it performs large.
Frequently Asked Questions — Basement Cinema, Berkshire
Can a small room genuinely outperform a larger cinema room?
Yes, in the right circumstances. This 3.6m square room demonstrates a screen-to-seat ratio more immersive than many larger rooms achieve, with the compact volume making full acoustic fabric treatment particularly effective.
Why is fabric wall treatment especially important in a small cinema room?
In a compact space, parallel reflective surfaces create comb filtering that blurs the stereo image. Treating all four walls with absorptive fabric, floor to ceiling, controls the room’s acoustic behaviour to a degree partial treatment cannot achieve.
How close can seating be to the screen with a 4K projector?
This room places seating at a distance roughly equal to the screen’s width — a ratio that would have produced visible pixel structure with older resolutions, but with native 4K throughout produces a genuinely immersive result instead.
