A Stunning Home Cinema Room for Family Movie Nights
What a fantastic room to design. The client’s family have three young children, and the brief was to create a magical room that would delight the children and their friends. The relaxed nature of the room, combined with the stuffed animals, creates a wonderful atmosphere that works in perfect harmony with the high-end cinema system installed.
Cinema for Families
The brief for this Dubai family cinema room was unlike most we receive — not the finest possible specification, not the largest possible screen, but the most magical possible space for three young children and their friends. The stuffed animals are not decorative additions to a cinema room; they are the cinema room. The soft furnishings, the cosy seating configuration, the age-appropriate film posters — all of these were as carefully considered as the Artcoustic 7.2.2 speaker system and the Sony laser projector.
What makes this project particularly interesting from a technical standpoint is the Trinnov audio processing. In a room designed for children and casual family viewing, a lesser installation might have accepted modest audio performance in favour of the interior priorities. Instead, the Trinnov system ensures that the Artcoustic SL24-12 front channels, the SL8-4 surrounds and the ceiling Atmos height channels are calibrated correctly for the room — delivering reference audio performance from a system that looks like it belongs in a playroom.
As the children grow, the stuffed animals will be removed, the posters will change, and the room will evolve with the family. The technology beneath it is designed to last decades. The flexibility of the design is the point.
The Cinema Design
The children of the family are aged 9, 6 and 4, so the soft surfaces and stuffed toys create the perfect cosy atmosphere — and as they grow, the toys can be moved out and the movie posters swapped for more age-appropriate films. The cinematic experience is provided by a high-end Artcoustic speaker package installed in 7.2.2 format. Behind the 3.8m screen sit three Artcoustic SL24-12 speakers (front left, centre and right channels), with two Artcoustic Sub 3 subwoofers nestled between them. Surround and rear channels are handled by Artcoustic SL8-4 speakers, installed with acoustic treatment behind a wool fabric wall system. Ceiling speakers provide height channels for Dolby Atmos duties. This is a system we install frequently, and it delivers a genuinely immersive, high-end cinematic experience — particularly when powered by our Trinnov audio system. The 3.8m projector screen displays a picture from a high-end Sony laser projector with access to a wide range of sources — two Apple TVs (one for adults, one for the kids) and satellite TV. As the cinema room is in a basement, there is no natural light to consider, and a Crestron lighting system controls light levels precisely, creating the right viewing environment for any time of day.

The seating chosen for this room is a BB Italia Tufty Time — a modular sofa in a classic orange finish. Its modular nature lets us specify footstools and reconfigure the room easily, while providing a genuinely comfortable, informal seating solution. A stack of bean bags allows the room to accommodate friends and family comfortably whenever the need arises.
