Transforming an Unloved Boat House into a Cinema Room
This cinema room in the English Lake District transforms the upper floor of an unloved and unused boat house on the banks of Lake Windermere. The available space — approximately 4.5m wide by 8m deep — is ideal for a dedicated cinema room that is isolated from the main house. The brief was for a fairly high-end cinema in an informal, relaxed atmosphere: definitely not a formal home cinema room.
Sony Projector and Artcoustic Speaker Package
A Sony VPL-VW360 projector — 1,500 lumens, plenty for a room with manageable light levels — projects onto a Screen Excellence 3.5m wide acoustically transparent screen. An Artcoustic SL8-4 speaker package provides the audio: three front channel speakers paired with Control 1 subwoofers behind the screen, and four Artcoustic SL8-4 surround speakers around the room. Custom grilles on the surround speakers add a touch of character to the interior. All decoding and amplification is handled by an Anthem MRX-520 AVR.
Our Home Cinema Services
Interior Design
We provided the clients with a colour palette and seating options, then rendered their choice for approval. The BB Italia Tufty Time sofas ensure an informal, comfortable environment while looking entirely at home in a boat house above Lake Windermere. Minimal spotlights in the ceiling provide just enough light to guide cinema-goers to their seats without over-engineering the space. The minimalist approach — to both interior design and technology — produced a room that is outstanding precisely because it does not try too hard.
From Boat House to Screening Room
The upper floor of an unused boat house on the banks of Lake Windermere is not an obvious starting point for a home cinema room. It is, however, an extraordinarily compelling one. The timber-framed structure provides natural acoustic character. The location on the grounds of an estate means sound isolation from the main house is inherent. The views across the lake are spectacular. This project is particularly relevant for clients with outbuildings, garden rooms or secondary structures who want to understand what a cinema installation in a non-domestic building can achieve.
Frequently Asked Questions — Lake Windermere Boathouse Cinema
Can a boathouse be converted into a home cinema?
Yes. This Lake Windermere installation converts the unused upper floor of a boathouse into a dedicated cinema — the timber-framed structure provides natural acoustic character, and its position separate from the main house gives inherent sound isolation.
Does a cinema room have to be formal to perform well?
No. This room was specifically briefed as informal and relaxed rather than a traditional cinema-style space — BB Italia Tufty Time sofas and minimal ceiling spotlights create a comfortable, low-key atmosphere while the Artcoustic and Sony system still delivers genuine performance.
Can outbuildings and secondary structures be used for cinema rooms?
Yes. Garden rooms, boathouses, garages and other outbuildings are frequently excellent candidates — separate from the main house, they offer natural sound isolation and freedom from the compromises of converting an occupied living space.
