A Reference-Level 12-Seat Cinema with Trinnov Audio and a 4.5m Projector Screen

This private home cinema installation in Ascot, Berkshire is among the most technically ambitious rooms we have designed and installed. At 6.4m wide, 8.4m long and with a 2.8m head height, the room is large enough to accommodate a genuinely theatrical experience — and the specification matches the space. A 4.5m acoustically transparent screen, a Sony VPL-VW5000 4K laser projector, a full Trinnov Audio processing and amplification system, and an Artcoustic speaker package in a 15.3.8 immersive format combine to deliver the kind of performance that few residential cinema rooms in the UK can match.

The Projector Screen and Sony 4K Laser Projector

The 4.5m acoustically transparent screen sits flush against the front wall, supported by a custom-built enclosure that also houses the Sony VPL-VW5000 projector — Sony’s flagship model at the time of installation and one of the finest 4K laser projectors available for residential use. With over 5,000 lumens of brightness and native 4K resolution, it delivers a picture of considerable quality across the full width of the screen. The acoustically transparent fabric allows the three Artcoustic front-stage speakers to sit directly behind the screen, maintaining perfect spatial alignment between image and sound.

Trinnov Audio Processing — Why This Room Demanded It

The speaker configuration in this room — 15 main channels, 3 LFE channels and 8 height channels — is beyond the capability of any conventional AV receiver. The Trinnov Altitude processor was the only meaningful choice. With the processing power to handle immersive audio formats including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X across the full channel count, and with Trinnov’s own Optimizer calibration system to correct for the acoustic behaviour of the room, it ensures every seat delivers the same audio experience regardless of position. The 15.3.8 Artcoustic speaker layout — with Trinnov’s room correction applied — produces an enveloping, three-dimensional soundstage that transforms the way film soundtracks are experienced.

Home Cinema Seating

Seating

Home Cinema Seating — Cineak Fortuny

A room of this size allows for considerable flexibility in seating layout. We specified Cineak Fortuny seats throughout — a combination of double sofas on the front row and individual seats across the rear. The Fortuny range is among the finest home cinema seating available, combining deep cushioning and adjustable lumbar support with clean contemporary aesthetics. Backlit Onyx tables at the end of each row serve a dual purpose: illuminating the step between rows and providing a surface for items too large for the in-arm cup holders. The result is a room that seats 12 people in considerable comfort for the duration of even the longest film.

Acoustic Fabric Wrapping

Managing the acoustics of a room with 26 speaker positions is not straightforward. Our approach here was a full acoustic fabric wrap — applied across all walls and the ceiling — which performs two functions simultaneously. It conceals every speaker from sight, creating a clean and immersive environment with no visible technology, and it prevents sound reflections from hard surfaces that would otherwise muddy the audio. The “pillow” effect — a technique where the fabric is applied over acoustic material with a slight relief — was chosen in consultation with the client and adds a sense of depth to the room’s surfaces. Every detail, including the seam lines and fixing points, was considered as part of the overall design.

The Result

This room performs at a level that rewards the most demanding content — from the subtlest atmospheric detail in a dialogue-heavy drama to the full physical impact of a large-scale action sequence. The combination of Trinnov processing, Artcoustic speakers, a Sony laser projector and a 4.5m screen in a properly designed acoustic environment is exceptional. It is the kind of installation that, once experienced, fundamentally changes what clients expect from a home cinema room.
