Home Cinema Installer Alps — Chalet Cinema Rooms
Cinema Design and Installation for Alpine Chalets
Custom Controls have designed and installed some of the finest cinema rooms in the French and Swiss Alps — bringing the same acoustic rigour, equipment specification and calibration standard to alpine chalets that we apply to our London and Dubai cinema rooms. Our Alps portfolio spans compact ski chalet cinema rooms in Morzine and Les Gets through to large prestige cinema rooms in Mégève and Courchevel. We have an Alps office in Montriond, Haute-Savoie, and have been delivering cinema installations to alpine properties since the early 2000s.
A cinema room is one of the most valuable additions to a ski chalet. The alpine day follows a natural pattern — mountain in the morning, lunch on the terrace, afternoon rest, dinner, and then the evening. A properly designed cinema room fills the evening hours in a way that no other facility in the chalet matches. For chalets managed as rental properties, a cinema room is a significant commercial differentiator — consistently cited in guest reviews as a primary reason for repeat bookings.
Every chalet is a different building, and the room available for a cinema is rarely a plain rectangle. Below we cover what is specific to alpine construction, the types of space that work well in a chalet, the equipment we specify for the mountain environment and the two Alps cinema projects we feature on this page.
Alpine Chalet Cinema Rooms — The Specific Considerations
Designing a cinema room for an alpine chalet presents different challenges from a London townhouse or a Cheshire country house. Alpine chalet construction — thick stone foundations, heavy timber frame, dense concrete — actually provides inherent acoustic isolation that UK domestic construction rarely matches. Sound transmission to neighbouring chalets or upstairs bedrooms is less of a concern than in a terraced townhouse. The acoustic challenge in an alpine cinema room is typically internal — managing the room’s own reverberance given the hard reflective surfaces common in chalet architecture.

The room itself usually sets the design. In our Châtel cinema, created from unused basement space while the chalet was being built, a head height of 2.4m and a room 5.8m wide by 6.5m long led us to an ultrawide 2.35:1 screen, a layout with the screen on the entrance wall and seating for six. Fixing the room dimensions, screen format, speaker positions and seating layout together at the design stage is what allows a modest basement to perform like a dedicated cinema.
The equipment delivery and installation logistics are the primary operational challenge. All equipment is assembled, tested and programmed at our UK workshop before being driven to the Alps. On-site installation is efficient and minimally disruptive — a critical consideration in a chalet that may have a rental booking in the adjacent window. We work with trusted local electricians and joiners across the Portes du Soleil, Haute-Savoie and the Three Valleys for the structural and electrical elements of each cinema installation.
Cinema Spaces That Suit a Chalet
Chalets rarely offer a blank, purpose-built room, so the first question is always which space will work best. The projects in this section are not all in the Alps — they are in London, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Cheshire, Scotland and the Lake District — but each solves a space problem of the kind we are asked about in chalets: a basement, a roof space, a living room that has to stay a living room, or a separate building in the grounds.
Basement and Lower-Ground Cinemas

Our Châtel cinema is a basement room, and lower floors are often where a chalet has space to spare. Basements are acoustically well suited to cinema: the structural mass of the surrounding ground provides inherent isolation from the rest of the house. The Kensington basement cinema shows the room as a reception space by day and a Dolby Atmos cinema by night, with an Anthem MRX-1120 receiver, eight Artcoustic speakers finished to match the walls and ceiling, and acoustic absorber panels printed with bespoke artwork.
For smaller lower-ground rooms, our Berkshire basement cinema measures just 3.6m by 3.6m yet carries a 3m wide projector screen, and the Pimlico basement cinema uses a 75″ Samsung display with Artcoustic 5.1 surround in a compact room used for sport, films and everyday viewing. A television-based room like this stays bright and usable with the lights on and leaves the ceiling clear, which suits a space that also serves as a games or family room.
Loft and Attic Cinemas

Pitched roof spaces are common in chalets and need the same careful treatment as any loft. Our Oxshott loft cinema in Surrey was built above a garage with no structural alterations: a 100″ acoustically transparent screen and an Artcoustic 7.2.2 package sit in an alcove within a stud wall, with dark, matt walls and a lighter ceiling to keep reflections off the picture in a room with a sloping ceiling.
The North London attic cinema works as a library by day and a cinema by night: the screen drops from a window alcove, the projector descends on a Future Automation lift and the lighting and blinds move into a film scene together. The Hertfordshire loft cinema in a barn conversion seats eight on the client’s existing Chesterfield sofas, which shows how a room can keep the furniture its owners already love. Our loft and attic conversion guide covers the design questions in more detail.
Living-Room and Lounge Cinemas

In an open-plan chalet living space, the cinema often has to share the room with everyday life. The Kensington living room cinema uses Artcoustic on-wall speakers colour-matched to the walls of a modern extension, with the Denon receiver and sources housed in an adjoining room so that only the 55″ television and the speakers are visible.
The Belgravia living room cinema goes further: the 75″ Samsung television is the only visible equipment, with 5.1 surround provided by Sonance in-ceiling speakers plastered into the ceiling. In the Chelsea living room, a Future Automation mount pulls the television and its Artcoustic soundbar out from the wall and rotates them, so the picture is angled correctly from any seat.
Garden Rooms, Annexes and Outbuildings

A separate building in the grounds, or an annexe, gives a chalet cinema its own acoustic envelope. The glass-walled garden cinema near Knutsford in Cheshire solves a room that should not have worked: motorised floor-to-ceiling acoustic curtains in a Tempo Wave configuration close across both glass walls, turning a reflective studio into an acoustically manageable cinema with an Artcoustic 7.4.2 system and eight Cineak seats.
The Lake District boathouse cinema occupies a space of roughly 4.5m by 8m on the upper floor of an unused boathouse, with a 3.5m acoustically transparent screen and a relaxed, informal interior. The Scottish estate cottage is a whole stone-built building converted to a 12-seat cinema, with a 3.8m screen and an Artcoustic 9.2.4 system, and with no neighbours to disturb. Our garden cinema room guide covers converting an outbuilding or building from scratch.
The Technology — What We Specify for Alpine Cinema Rooms
4K laser projection. Sony and JVC 4K laser projectors for all alpine cinema installations. The alpine environment — extreme cold during unoccupied periods, rapid temperature changes when the chalet is opened up — makes laser the only practical specification. Lamp-based projectors are damaged by the temperature cycling that is a fact of alpine chalet life. Laser sources are robust to temperature variation and maintain their rated output for 20,000 hours without intervention. Read our projector guide →
Screen Excellence acoustically transparent screens. Fixed-frame acoustically transparent screens on all dedicated alpine cinema rooms — the front speaker array sits behind the screen, with audio and video spatially aligned. Read our screen guide →
Artcoustic speaker systems. Artcoustic modular speaker systems available in any finish to match the chalet’s fabric wall treatment. Dolby Atmos configurations range from 5.1.2 to the 11.4.2 layout of our Mégève cinema.
Trinnov and Anthem processing. Trinnov Altitude for our most ambitious alpine cinema rooms; Anthem MRX for mid-range. Room correction calibration as standard on every installation.
Kaleidescape. Kaleidescape movie servers on all serious alpine cinema installations — lossless Dolby Atmos and full uncompressed 4K HDR. The Kaleidescape server integrates with Crestron so the film library is accessible from the same iPad as every other chalet system.
Crestron and Lutron integration. Every alpine cinema is integrated with Crestron and Lutron. One button press on the iPad sets the cinema scene across the whole chalet — the cinema activates, the lighting adjusts and other zones go quiet. For chalets where the cinema is part of a wider après-ski and entertainment specification, see our chalet audio and entertainment guide →
Home Cinema Maintenance & System Takeovers for Alpine Chalets
We provide pre-season maintenance visits for all alpine cinema rooms we have installed — scheduled before the winter or summer season begins, ensuring the projector, processor, source equipment and control system are all working correctly before the first guests or owners arrive. Remote monitoring covers projector health, Trinnov processor status, Kaleidescape server and Crestron system performance year-round. Software updates and programming adjustments are completed remotely without a site visit in most cases. For cinema rooms installed by another company, or rooms that have fallen behind current audio and video formats, we also offer full takeover, renovation and recalibration. Alps Home Cinema FAQs
- Can Custom Controls install a cinema room in an alpine chalet?
Yes. Custom Controls have been installing cinema rooms in alpine chalets since the early 2000s, with projects across Morzine, Les Gets, Châtel, Mégève, Méribel and Courchevel. Our Alps office in Montriond, Haute-Savoie covers the Portes du Soleil region directly. - Which spaces in a chalet suit a cinema room?
Basements and lower-ground floors, loft and attic spaces, garden rooms and annexes, and living rooms all work when they are designed properly. Each presents a different problem, from ceiling height and sloping roofs to glass walls and shared living space, and the acoustic design is planned around that space before equipment is chosen. - Can you support a chalet cinema remotely?
Yes. Remote monitoring covers every chalet we support, which matters in properties that stand empty for weeks between visits. We can diagnose and resolve the vast majority of issues from our UK and Alps offices without a site visit. - Can cinema equipment cope with Alpine winters?
Yes, if it is specified for it. Equipment must operate reliably through winter shutdowns, rapid reheating and the humidity cycles that come with mountain living. - Can you check the cinema before we arrive for the season?
Yes. We offer pre-season and pre-arrival system checks, so the projector, processor and controls are fully operational before the first guests arrive. - Can you install WiFi in a stone-walled alpine chalet?
Yes, though thick stone walls require careful planning. We survey every property before specifying, designing the access point layout and network backbone to provide consistent coverage throughout the chalet, including the cinema room for streaming. - Why specify a laser projector for an alpine chalet cinema?
Laser is the only practical projector specification for alpine chalets. The alpine environment damages lamp-based projectors through thermal cycling. - Do you offer pre-season cinema maintenance and takeovers for alpine chalets?
Yes. We offer pre-season maintenance visits covering projector health, Kaleidescape server updates, Trinnov calibration checks, Crestron programming updates and Lutron scene verification.
